Getting to the island is easy as there are two ferry crossing routes, Wemyss Bay to Rothesay and Colintraive to Rhubodach, both operated by CalMac.

EXCELLENTVerified Lovely trip spotting wildlife Went with our 6 year old granddaughter. The weather wasn’t great, but the skipper is lovely and we had an amazing time, spotting porpoise and seals. We had barely left the harbour and encountered a pod of bottle nose dolphins. With Al at the helm of Commando One we headed out along Bute’s coastline. Al’s knowledge of the local area and especially the geology was second to none. Almost everywhere we looked we saw harbour porpoise and stopped to observe them. They got that close to us we could hear them exhaling as they surfaced. The boat, with its speed, covered a great distance in the 2 hour trip and even managed a lap of Cumbrae. We also stopped at a seal colony and for the twitchers out there plenty of sea birds were spotted.I always try to do a boat trip when visiting Scotland and have been on a couple of disappointing ones, with the knowledge you aren’t guaranteed to see anything, this one was amazing!!Posted onVerified A boat trip with a lot of fun, wildlife, scenery and local knowledge!
